Proper Scrimmage!

Well guys, yesterday was our first ever scrimmage! It was so awesome I don't even know where to begin...

In the morning me, Bones & Scary met up & had a big old t-shirt making session which was great cause I think it really took our minds off the afternoon & stopped us feeling to nervous. It was great just to sit around eating cake & cutting up old shirts. I don't think I was feeling nervous about any one thing, just anticipatory. We just about finished in time & set right off - we were only 5 minutes late!

We arrived to find an impatient Ash. skates on, standing at the top of the stairs! Just enough time to ask how the RCRG/London game went & then straight in for stretching. I can tell you now the next lot of stretches I lead are going to be hardcore! I've learnt some lovely new short person stretches. I've even found one I can't do yet. Roll on warm up time!

Warm up was followed by 3 drills one after the other - falling in pairs & catching up round the circuit, squats & sprints - 30s of each round & round (I noticed a LOT of cheating in this from bloody everyone.. squatting means shoulders back slackers!), and then in to 10mins laps. I got 57 (57!!!!) laps in 10 mins. I couldn't freaking believe it! The floor there is sooooo shiny & slick I think I was doing 10s laps which is unheard of for me in the Arcadia. I think everyone else got a lot in as well - by 5mins I was on 28 - a new record!!

We did some lateral drills & I think I've finally mastered the old one foot in front of the other cut. We were told to lean on our front leg, but I was secretly pleased to see some of the rather talented Roller Birds leaning on the back because that's what I do & it freaking works so much better! We did figure 8's where you race each other in pairs around cones doing a tight arc round the cone & then a crossover etc etc. Twas good but I was shit at it - more of that please!

And then, fiiiiiiinally, scrimmage was announced! There wasn't even time to be nervous... we teamed up & had a quick huddle where they explained the blocking strategy (strategy! I know!) to us, I pulled Jammer assist first which I thought, ok, if I have 1 mission at least I know what to do. I think I did alright as well, I pulled of 3 successful arm whips, tempered only by accidentally blocking the jammer when she came in for a hip whip oops! The other blocking roles where a bit more tricky & a lot of the time I felt like I was just being a body rather then actively helping. I jammed twice, got lead jammer once & scored a grand total of zero points that I counted! Forget to check the bloody stats at the end though duh!

2 trips to the penalty box (forearms!), two major smacks in the the wall & a few buckets of sweat later it was all over & the black team won (I was on the white team!). Our ladies did super awesome - I distinctly heard one girl on my team go 'wow, G Whizz is good.' Which made me grin :D

Having had a chance to test out all the positions now I think I definitely prefer blocking to Jamming. I'm gagging to have a proper go at pivot & boss everyone around a bit ;)

Me & Bones line up against each other:
